Iranian traditional medicine (ITM), also known as Persian traditional medicine (PTM), is one of the most ancient forms of traditional medicine. ITM is grounded in the concept of four humors: phlegm (Balgham), blood (Dam), yellow bile (Ṣafrā’) and black bile (Saudā’). Globally, this medicine reached its peak in Iran. Ancient Iranian Medicine, the knowledge of four humors as a healing system, was developed by Persian polymath Hakim Avicenna in his medical encyclopedia, The Canon of Medicine. ITM strongly focuses on prioritizing health maintenance and disease prevention over treatment.


1- Phytotherapy

One of the treatment methods in Iranian traditional medicine is herbal medicine. The treatment of various physical and mental diseases by plants is called “herbal medicine”. One of the oldest methods in the world is herbal medicine. God the Wise has placed the cure of all diseases and pains in nature.

2- Massage therapy

Another treatment for traditional Iranian medicine is massage therapy. Treatment of muscle, skeletal, gastrointestinal, headache, stress and depression, improving blood flow and increasing oxygen supply to tissues and healing dozens of other diseases are some of the properties of massage therapy. Some therapeutic massages include Irouda, Yomihuo, Tai Masa, soothing, and beauty massages.

3, Shiatsu

Squeezing the vital points of the body for health by fingers is called “Shiatsu”, which is another method of traditional medicine treatment. A healthy and effective technique that is more preventative and is used as a form of physiotherapy for certain diseases. Patients get their energy and stored energy this way, and people who suffer from stress, tension, depression, or insomnia can be treated this way.

4- Hijama

Hijama is another treatment for traditional medicine. In Persian, Hijama is defined as a vital treatment and is a blood sampling method that is performed to prevent diseases and treat some diseases. It has been suggested as a therapeutic element. According to the advice of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) who said: “The best Eid is the period of Hijama”, people used to celebrate Eid. Hijama is used to widely to prevent and treat diseases such as asthma, drug addiction, indigestion, migraine headaches and nerves, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure and skin diseases.

5. Cupping

Another method of traditional medicine in Iran is Cupping. Cupping is the creation of suction in different parts of the body in order to dilate the body and divert substances from a specific point, which is also called dry cupping. In some patients, cups should be done with a combination of special oils.

6- Leech therapy

Leech therapy is one of the medical blood sampling methods that has a special place in traditional medicine in terms of how to take blood and the substance heroin that enters the body by leeches. Each leech has no therapeutic effect. Leech saliva contains an anticoagulant that dilutes the blood, narrows the arteries, and increases blood flow and oxygenation to the site or organ. Leech therapy is now used in diseases such as coronary heart disease, skin grafting, organ transplantation, varicose veins, skin lesions, joint disease, osteoarthritis, hemorrhoids, skin beauty and strengthening the immune system.

7- Fasd

One of the methods of blood sampling in traditional medicine. This eliminates many toxins from the body, especially during soda, and removes waste products that are deposited and increased in the blood. Important uses of Fasd include: Sciatica, hemorrhoids, predominant nature cleansing, gastrointestinal diseases, etc.

8- Hydrotherapy

One of the traditional methods of medicine, along with or without herbal essential oils, that is widely used to improve rooting, skin lesions, joint pain, sciatica, vitality and strengthening the body, strengthen muscles and correct body pores, warming and increasing body moisture.


‘’In Persian Medicine, the four classical elements of earth, water, air, and fire are the constituents of creation on earth.

The excess or less of warmness and humidity define four essential temperaments of:

  • “elemental fire” (choleric or Safrawiy), is hot and dry
  • “elemental air” (sanguine or Damawiy), is warm and moist
  • ‘’elemental water” (phlegmatic or Balghamiy), is cold and moist
  • “elemental earth” (melancholic or Saudawiy), is dry and cold

The contact of these elements with each other followed by interactions between their opposing qualities, ultimately results in a compound with a new homogenous quality or temperament.


According to the sages, four factors are required for the appearance of any phenomenon in the universe. These four factors or causes include:

  1. Material cause
  2. Agent cause
  3. Formal cause
  4. Final cause’’

Consumption of unhealthy and acidic foods such as fast food, alcoholic drinks, pork products, fried food, pasta, pizza, fish, beef, seafood, industrial sauce, canned food, fizzy drink, ice cream, doughnuts, fried food, yogurt, milk, butter and cheese make the body more vulnerable to diseases such as the cronavirus.


In our current daily diet there is an absence of the base (alkaline) foods that boost our immune system against diseases such as honey, lamb, turkey, olives, olive oil, coconut, avocado, mango, coconut oil, sesame seeds, sesame seeds oil, dates, garlic, ginger, apples, cheek peas, grapes, bananas, tahini with honey, oregano, turmeric, saffron, mint, carrots, barley, turnips, holy basil and sumac powder.
